Sean Morris notched the hat trick to lead No. 13 UMass to a 10-7 win over Stony Brook in men's lacrosse action on a snowy Saturday afternoon in Amherst, Mass. The win snaps a two-game win streak for Stony Brook as it falls to 2-1. UMass improves to 3-0.
Rhys Duch's second goal of the game with 43 seconds left in the third quarter drew the upset-minded Seawolves within 7-6. SB's Jim Astea then won the ensuing faceoff and was fouled which put the Seawolves a man-up with 34 ticks remaining in the quarter. Twenty seconds later, UMass goalie Bill Schell stopped Bo Tripodi at point-blank range and the Minutemen scooped up the ball and raced downfield. As time wound down, Brian Jacovina fed Morris who slid a shot past Brendan Callahan with four seconds on the clock and UMass led 8-6. It was Morris' third goal of the game and it proved to be the gamewinner.
Morris' goal ingited a three-goal spurt by the Minutemen which saw them increase their lead to 10-6. Sean Chamberlain's goal with 5:29 left in the game cut the lead to 10-7 but SB could get no closer the rest of the way.
The game got off to wild start as five goals were scored in the first 3:21 of the game. UMass drew first blood with a goal off the stick of Andrew Recchione just 38 seconds into the game. Stony Brook wasted no time in getting even as Adam Marksberry converted a feed from Astea nine seconds later to even the game at 1. The Minutemen then struck for two goals from Pat Larmon and Morris 29 seconds apart to put the hosts ahead 3-1. Tripodi sliced the lead to 3-2 at 11:39 on an assist from Chamberlain. SB and UMass would trade goals over the remaining 11 minutes and UMass led 4-3 after one quarter. The Minutemen would go on to lead 6-4 at the half.
Chamberlain led the way on offense for Stony Brook with two goals and two assists. Duch had a pair of goals while Tripodi and Larry Cerasi each had one. Callahan made 17 saves. Stony Brook was undone by 26 turnovers, 15 of which were unforced.
The Seawolves are back in action next Saturday when they host Penn State. Face-off is 1 p.m.
