PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Two years ago, then-junior
Luke Coulter set a school record in the 800-meter dash, finishing in 1:50.24 at the Florida Relays.
Now a graduate student, Coulter broke that record on Friday at the Ocean State Invitational, finishing below 1:50.00 for the first time in his career.
Coulter won the event with a time of 1:49.78, finishing more than two seconds ahead of Maine's James Olivier. It was his second win of the season, after his first-place finish in the Icahn Invitational in March.
Coulter's run was one of three record-setting performances.
Vann Moffett shattered the school record in the 3000m, winning the race in 8:02.23. It was an eight-second improvement from his previous career best, and was the record for the Ray Treacy Track Facility.
The third record of the night came from
Robert Becker, whose 4:02.23 time in the mile earned him a second-place finish. Becker finished two seconds behind Providence's AJ Ernst.
Siara Guevara won the 400m hurdles, finishing in 1:05.49. It was the best time of Guevara's career, nearly a two-second improvement from her performance at the Colonial Relays earlier this season.
Carlos Santos dominated the 3000m steeple, posting a time of 9:06.66 to win the event. It was the best time of his career.
Other strong performances included
Fiona McLoughlin (9:40.63) and
Tara Hauff (9:57.99) finishing second and third in the 3000m and
Shane Henderson's fourth-place finish in the mile (8:29.99).
