Stony Brook Football Spring Notebook - Week 2

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Spring season is well underway for the Stony Brook University football program as it is in the midst of the second week of team activities. The Seawolves held their first scrimmage this past Saturday as it marked just their second practice in pads this Spring.

The scrimmage featured 7 on 7 drills followed by a full 11 on 11 as the Seawolves were able to get after it on the gridiron in game-like situations with referees in attendance to officiate. The scrimmage was highlighted by a 72-yard touchdown run by reigning All-CAA First Teamer Ty Son Lawton who looked to be in mid-season form right out of the gate.

Joshua Zamot, Drew Guttieri, and Daron Bryden were slinging the ball around the field as the trio all took reps at the quarterback position. The trio moved the ball around the field as they combined to find 11 different receivers. The defense was flying around the field, while the specialists earned key reps as they worked on several different field goal and punting scenarios over the course of the day.

The biggest team goal that we have right now on the offensive side of the ball is to develop the quarterback and everything that we are doing is trying to develop the quarterback. We have three young guys, who have very limited experience – from the installation of the offense on what we’re doing, to the protections, to the running game it’s all based on him and what he can do. Right now, everything that we are doing is to develop a quarterback. That would be the philosophy on what we are trying to get right now out of Spring football with our guys.
Co-Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Chris Bache
The biggest goal for us is to take the next step as a group. We have a lot of guys coming back which I am excited about, and we must continue developing the new guys that we added so that they can be impact players for us. The number one thing that we are looking to do is create havoc plays and more of them on a play-by-play basis. That’s TFLs, sacks, PBUs, forced fumbles, and takeaways. We are really trying to have an aggressive, attacking mentality this Spring – keeping the scheme a little bit more basic so we can really hone the skills that it takes to do those types of things. The next thing that we are trying to do is develop a competitive mindset, which helps create that havoc. We want guys battling to become the starter or earn a role, so we are playing a lot of different guys right now, probably more than you would in a Fall season to see who has some of that, who’s excelling, who’s studying their playbook, and who’s going to help us win. There are special situations that are really important in football, red zone and third down are probably the most important. Throughout Spring, we really want to be Alpha Wolves in those scenarios where we are winning two out of every three snaps. If we can do that, we will be where we want to be as a defense come Fall.
Defensive Coordinator Rob Noel

The Seawolves got a full practice in on Tuesday as they hit the field for the first time this week. On Wednesday, several members of the team visited Mill Pond Elementary School in St. James. Anthony Williams, Keith Winfrey, Ramal West, Jordan Jackson, RJ Lamarre, Clayton Taylor, and Sam Howson all spent time with the students of Mill Pond Elementary to pay it forward to the next generation.

Stony Brook is back on the field on Thursday for practice and conclude the week with their second intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday at 9 a.m. The scrimmage is open to the public.
