2023 Stony Brook Football Spring Notebook - Week 4

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook football team concluded its spring slate on Saturday afternoon with its annual Spring game. The Seawolves split up into "white" and "red" teams and played an offense-defense based intrasquad scrimmage that featured the offense picking up a 21-19 victory.

The offense earned points in the traditional fashion, while a scoring system was in place that allowed the defense to earn points outside of scoring a touchdown or a safety. The defense also received points for the following: a stop prior to the offense crossing the 50-yard line was worth two points, a stop after the offense crossed the 50-yard line was worth one point, three and outs were two points, and turnovers were four points.

Wide receivers Anthony Johnson and RJ Lamarre posted standout games for the Seawolves. Johnson hauled in six passes for a game-high 123 yards, which included a 53-yard reception on the offense's opening drive. Lamarre made three catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. Transfer quarterback Casey Case went 17-for-25 for 209 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Case connected with Johnson for the 53-yard pitch and catch on the Seawolves' opening drive and then later found wide receiver Jayce Freeman for a five-yard touchdown and Lamarre for 53-yard touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, JuJu Ganthier led all Seawolves with seven tackles in the game. Fellow corner back Willensky Nicolas was right behind Ganthier as he made five stops on the outside. Clarens Legagneur made three tackles, tallied a TFL, and one PBU. Taylor Bolesta, Vincent Rotelli, and Jerrod Hills were all credited with sacks in the game. Hashim Desire-Brisard finished with a pair for TFLs up front. Transfer Dyshier Clary recorded two tackles, a TFL, and batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage.

2023 STONY BROOK FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Stony Brook announced its full 2023 schedule on January 10. The schedule features five home games at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium and a non-conference matchup with FBS opponent Arkansas State.

"I am excited about opening day – we get a chance to open the season at home on the Thursday of Labor Day weekend against Delaware. Every CAA schedule is a challenge, but we have our common northern opponents on our schedule which is nice because we continue to build those rivalries. It is also good to have Villanova back on the schedule this year and I am looking forward to another season of Stony Brook football," said coach Priore as he discussed the Seawolves' 2023 schedule.

For the third year in a row Stony Brook opens the season at LaValle Stadium the Thursday of Labor Day weekend. The Seawolves are set to host Delaware on August 31, as they kick-off the season under the lights on Long Island. Stony Brook and Delaware will meet for the first time since October 16, 2021, when the Seawolves picked up a 34-17 win over the Blue Hens at LaValle Stadium.
