2023 Stony Brook Football Spring Notebook - Week 3

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook football team wrapped up its final scrimmage in preparation for its annual Spring game. The Seawolves took the field on Sunday, April 16, and continued to lay the foundation for the 2023 season.

Following special teams work to open up the scrimmage, the Seawolves worked on situational red zone opportunities and third down plays. The first score of the day came courtesy of a four-yard touchdown pass from Drew Guttieri to Jayce Freeman. Guttieri connected with Freeman, who was open in the end zone to get the momentum flowing for the offense.

Running backs Shaki Carson, Johnny Martin, and Jayden Cook continued to show off their athleticism in the backfield for the Seawolves. Martin found the end zone on the ground, while both Carson and Cook demonstrated their skills on the ground and in the pass game.

Spring ball has been progressing correctly. We are implementing a lot of new things; we have a lot of new players who are getting the opportunity to play. I think each practice we see some things coming together. It’s a progression, it doesn’t stop at the end of spring ball – it’s going to continue throughout the summer and into preseason.

2023 STONY BROOK FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Stony Brook announced its full 2023 schedule on January 10. The schedule features five home games at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium and a non-conference matchup with FBS opponent Arkansas State.

"I am excited about opening day – we get a chance to open the season at home on the Thursday of Labor Day weekend against Delaware. Every CAA schedule is a challenge, but we have our common northern opponents on our schedule which is nice because we continue to build those rivalries. It is also good to have Villanova back on the schedule this year and I am looking forward to another season of Stony Brook football," said coach Priore as he discussed the Seawolves' 2023 schedule.

For the third year in a row Stony Brook opens the season at LaValle Stadium the Thursday of Labor Day weekend. The Seawolves are set to host Delaware on August 31, as they kick-off the season under the lights on Long Island. Stony Brook and Delaware will meet for the first time since October 16, 2021, when the Seawolves picked up a 34-17 win over the Blue Hens at LaValle Stadium.
