New Week 2 Notebook

2023 Stony Brook Football Spring Notebook - Week 2

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Spring ball rolls on for the Stony Brook football team as the Seawolves completed another strong week of practice which culminated in their second scrimmage this past Saturday, April 8. Stony Brook is now more than halfway through its Spring slate with its annual Spring game less than two weeks away on Sunday, April 23, at 2 p.m.

On the offense’s second possession of the scrimmage, Jayden Cook took a direct snap, ran right, and burst to the outside into the end zone for the first touchdown of the day. Cook showed off his athleticism lining up in the back field, at wide receiver, and in the slot throughout the scrimmage.

As the offense continued to work on situational red zone opportunities, quarterback Drew Guttieri connected with wide receiver RJ Lamarre on a 12-yard pitch and catch. It marked the second week in a row that Lamarre hauled in a touchdown catch in Stony Brook’s scrimmage. The Stony Brook faithful got their first look at transfer running back Johnny Martin in a scrimmage on Saturday. Fellow transfer quarterback Casey Case hit Martin coming out of the back field on a swing pass. Martin made the catch, turned up field, and darted his was to the end zone for a 53-yard touchdown.

It is challenging at times, but I have been pleased overall. We wanted to be a more quarterback driven offense, moving skill players around, and utilizing motions – and I think that has caught on. There are going to be some mistakes along the way when you are doing a number of things that way. I think there has been progress and I am pleased with it overall.
Coach Priore on the overall progress of the installation of the new system on the offensive side of the ball

The Seawolves prepare for another week of practice and are back on the field on Tuesday and Thursday at 8 a.m. Stony Brook will hold its third scrimmage of the Spring season on Sunday, April 16, at 10 a.m. All Spring scrimmages are free to attend and open to the public at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves will continue their community service program throughout the semester as they pay it forward to their surrounding community.

2023 STONY BROOK FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Stony Brook announced its full 2023 schedule on January 10. The schedule features five home games at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium and a non-conference matchup with FBS opponent Arkansas State.

"I am excited about opening day – we get a chance to open the season at home on the Thursday of Labor Day weekend against Delaware. Every CAA schedule is a challenge, but we have our common northern opponents on our schedule which is nice because we continue to build those rivalries. It is also good to have Villanova back on the schedule this year and I am looking forward to another season of Stony Brook football," said coach Priore as he discussed the Seawolves' 2023 schedule.

For the third year in a row Stony Brook opens the season at LaValle Stadium the Thursday of Labor Day weekend. The Seawolves are set to host Delaware on August 31, as they kick-off the season under the lights on Long Island. Stony Brook and Delaware will meet for the first time since October 16, 2021, when the Seawolves picked up a 34-17 win over the Blue Hens at LaValle Stadium.
