Stony Brook Football Spring Notebook - Week 1

2023 Stony Brook Football Spring Notebook - Week 1

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Spring is here, and the Stony Brook football team is back on the field laying the foundation for the 2023 season. The Seawolves began their Spring slate with their first of 15 practices on Thursday, March 23. Stony Brook is through the first week and a half of its Spring schedule and concluded its first scrimmage this past Saturday, April 1.

The offense began implementing its new system live and in action on Saturday as the teams scrimmaged for the first time. The highlight of the day came on the offensive side of the ball when transfer quarterback Casey Case connected with wide receiver RJ Lamarre for a 59-yard pitch and catch. Case found Lamarre down the field with a deep ball. Lamarre hauled it in and turned on the jets to find the end zone.

Transfer running back Shakhi Carson saw action in the backfield and was explosive as he averaged 5.1 yards per rush on his carries. On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Anthony Ferrelli and transfer corner back Jeffrey Davis Jr. were flying around the field making plays.

It has been a long offseason with lifts and our weight room program. We are blessed to be on the field. There are a lot of people who want this opportunity, and we don’t take it for granted – we stress that – there are a lot of people who want to be in our shoes. Every time we come out here, we remember why we do it.

The Seawolves will continue their community service program throughout the semester as they pay it forward to their surrounding community.

2023 STONY BROOK FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Stony Brook announced its full 2023 schedule on January 10. The schedule features five home games at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium and a non-conference matchup with FBS opponent Arkansas State.

"I am excited about opening day – we get a chance to open the season at home on the Thursday of Labor Day weekend against Delaware. Every CAA schedule is a challenge, but we have our common northern opponents on our schedule which is nice because we continue to build those rivalries. It is also good to have Villanova back on the schedule this year and I am looking forward to another season of Stony Brook football," said coach Priore as he discussed the Seawolves' 2023 schedule.

For the third year in a row Stony Brook opens the season at LaValle Stadium the Thursday of Labor Day weekend. The Seawolves are set to host Delaware on August 31, as they kick-off the season under the lights on Long Island. Stony Brook and Delaware will meet for the first time since October 16, 2021, when the Seawolves picked up a 34-17 win over the Blue Hens at LaValle Stadium.
