Three Seawolves Capture Individual Titles at Metropolitan Championships

Bronx, N.Y. - Leonora Joy, Jackie Nunez and Dave deWolfe each won individual titles as the Stony Brook track and field team enjoyed its best-ever performance at the Metropolitan Championships on Saturday.

Joy won the mile in a school-record time of 4:54.11 that also qualified her for the ECAC Championships. Nunez also qualified for ECACs with her victory in the 1000m, recording a time of 2:54.51. deWolfe led the men's team by winning the 3000m in 8:27.56, which qualified him for the IC4A Championships.

In addition to Joy's school-record time in the mile, two other Seawolves marks fell by the wayside. The women's distance medley relay team of Joy, Nicola Baker, Jackie Berman and Nunez finished seconnd with an ECAC-qualifying and school-record time of 11:57.01. On the men's side, Dale Summerville broke the school record in the mile, finishing third in a time of 4:14.50.

Other scorers were Corinne Leake, who placed seventh in the 500m in 1:16.61, good enough to qualify for ECACs. Laura Hixson finished seventh in the 3000m and Jackie Berman also took seventh place in the 800m with a time of 2:17.48.

In other men's results, the distance medley team of Summerville, Chris Hunt, Brian Farrell and Jonathan Brims placed third and qualified for IC4As. Hunt ran an IC4A-qualifying time of 1:04.44 in the 500m that placed him sixth, and Farrell was also a scorer in the 1000m with a sixth-place finish in 2:32.06. Brims also recorded a sixth-place finish in the 800m.

In field events, Craig Matuza took second place in the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 6 1/4 inches. Joe Cardinale finished eighth in the event with a season-best throw of 46 feet, 7 1/4 inches.

Both teams finished seventh out of 16 teams, the highest finish ever for Stony Brook at the Met Championships.
