New York State Bill

Introduction

Name, Image, and Likeness legislation went into effect for all NCAA student-athletes on July 1st, 2021. In the first year, NIL has expanded to great heights and has truly benefited all student-athletes across the country. Stony Brook has provided our student-athletes with a vast set of resources to maximize their NIL potential to the best of their ability. Paramount to being successful in the NIL space is adherence to all state, federal, and NCAA guidelines put in place. Any deviation from the set guidelines could put the student-athlete at risk of violating NCAA rules and affecting their athletic eligibility for their Stony Brook Athletics team.

Compliance Mission Statement
The Mission of the Stony Brook Compliance Office is to incorporate the expectations of the NCAA's principles of sportsmanship and ethical conduct within the overall mission of the athletic department. As a result, the task of the Stony Brook Compliance Office is to coordinate, monitor and verify compliance with all NCAA,  CAA, and University requirements. A major component of the Compliance Office is to educate athletics department staff members, coaches, student-athletes, friends of the program and the institution as a whole on NCAA rules through a variety of means. Maintaining this website is included in our educational opportunities as we remain committed to preventing NCAA violations to the best of our abilities. As a member of the NCAA, the Stony Brook Athletic Department is committed to the principle of institutional control in a manner consistent with the rules and regulations of the NCAA, and CAA Conference.

Stony Brook Seawolves Exchange
Seawolves Exchange feat
ures a department-wide partnership with INFLCR intended to empower Seawolves student-athletes with innovative technologies and educational programming to enhance their personal brands on social media.  All student-athletes will have access to the platform's NIL Suite, which features tools to help prepare them for a new era on the horizon as it relates to Name, Image and Likeness opportunities. INFLCR's NIL Suite provides custom reporting with digital education and content consulting. The Seawolves Exchange is a student-athlete NIL business registry, custom-designed for businesses, donors, alumni, and any other interested NIL dollars wishing to connect with student-athletes. Registered businesses can search, filter and initiate conversations with your student-athletes to discuss an NIL deal. Once the NIL deal between a registered business and your student-athlete is completed, the business will use the Seawolves Exchange to create a transaction that will produce a direct payment to the student-athlete and automate a disclosure to the INFLCR Verified Compliance Ledger. The institution does not have to get involved in the deal and all transactions within the local exchange are consolidated into one 1099 at the end of the year for easier tax reporting purposes for registered businesses and athletes.
