Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers are health care professionals who work directly with physicians to optimize activity and participation of student-athletes. Athletic trainers are an integral part of every collegiate athletic program and ensure that student-athletes are competing in a safe and healthy environment. The sports medicine staff is dedicated to assisting the student athlete's development of his/her maximum potential for academic, athletic and personal success.

The primary goal of the sports medicine staff is to provide high-quality health care for student-athletes competing at the intercollegiate level for Stony Brook University. The staff also educates the student-athletes in the areas of injury prevention, nutrition, hygiene, substance abuse, etc.  There are ten certified athletic trainers and numerous athletic training students who work under the supervision and direction of the medical director. The Sports Medicine staff collaborates with various medical specialists in the community helping to deliver traditional sports medicine services to the SBU student-athletes.

The sports medicine staff is exclusively empowered to determine the participation of our student-athletes. Each student-athlete is monitored with yearly athletic physicals, medical questionnaires, and orthopedic baseline examinations. On a daily basis, the athletic training staff directly supervises multiple athletic activities with preventative measures being taken to reduce the risk of injury. Should a student-athlete become injured, the athletic trainer recognizes and evaluates the injury, provides immediate care, makes a timely referral if necessary, initiates treatment and develops a rehabilitation program. The objective of the staff's medical care is to consider the student-athlete's appropriate return to participation consistent with their long-term well being.
