The Stony Brook women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over Providence in Stony Brook, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon.
The Seawolves (2-4) opened the match by winning the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. Patricia Gomez and Anne Cathrine Valle won, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, while Karen Hansen and Carmie Zink teamed for an 8-4 victory at No. 2. The No. 3 duo of Georgia Bushell and Claire Shean posted an 8-6 victory.
In singles action, Stony Brook captured the top four matches in straight sets to earn the dual match victory. Gomez defeated Cheri Lapone, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 1 spot, while Valle did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0, victory over Sara Biterri at No. 2 singles. No. 3 Karen Hansen won, 6-0, 6-3, over Molly Gilbride, while No. 4 Georgia Bushell recorded a 6-1, 6-1, win over Lindsey Christensen. The Friars captured the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches. Zink took Nicole Rodger to three sets in the No. 5 singles match, but Rodger pulled out a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 win. No. 6 Trish Pollack defeated Claire Shean, 6-3, 6-3.
