Fordham Tops Women's Tennis, 5-2

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's tennis team (4-6) went out to an early lead against Fordham, but the Rams posted a 5-2 victory over the Seawolves on Monday afternoon.

The Seawolves swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Anne Cathrine Valle and Patricia Gomez posted an 8-3 victory over Xerli Woo and Danielle Spigner at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 tandem of Carmie Zink and Karen Hansen outlasted Morgan Brinley and Christina Papa, 9-8. The No. 3 duo of Georgia Bushell and Claire Shean completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory over Alex Cazangill and Candice Lee.

However, the Seawolves then won just one singles match. Valle earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Woo in the No. 1 spot, but the Rams earned the five other victories. Papa won a close match over Hansen at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory. Brinley handed Bushell a 6-4, 6-3 loss at No. 3, and Lauren Conching and Shean also suffered straight-set defeats. Cazangill defeated Conching at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2, while Shean suffered a 6-1, 6-3 setback to Spigner at No. 5. Zink, playing at No. 6 singles, captured the first set against Elizabeth Murray, 6-4, but Murray battled back to even the match with a 6-2 win in the second set. The match was then retired with the outcome already decided.

Stony Brook returns to action tomorrow at Hofstra at 3 p.m.
