Question: How come SBU football plays only 10 games when a lot of other colleges
plays 11 games? Go Seawolves!! Matthew Eannuzzi - Centereach, N.Y.
Fiore: Matthew, In short, Stony Brook University has historically had a football scheduling philosophy that permitted our program to play ten regular season contests.
Historically, Division 1-AA football programs were limited in the number of
regular season contests they were allowed to participate in (10) via NCAA
regulations. However, recently that rule was amended to now allow Division
1-AA football programs to play 11 regular season contests.
Moving forward our plan is to increase the number of regular season
contests from ten to 11 to accommodate the national trend of our peers.
However, before doing so, we first must have our financial matters and
budgetary processes operating at a level that will give our
student-athletes the strongest chance to have success on the field of play
and in the classroom.
