Ask the AD: Fiore Answers Your Questions

Jan. 4, 2005

Question: Dear Mr. Fiore,

I have been an avid fan of the Seawolves for four years and was curious to know, will there ever be any improvements at the Indoor (Seawolves) Sports Complex, such as better sightlines for the participating athletes during a basketball game, or larger seating, or even a new video scoreboard? If these are not avaliable or cannot be accomplished, are their plans for a near future? JD MacKinnon - Port Jefferson Station

Answer: Hi JD - Great to hear from you. I hope this e-mail finds you well and that your "new year" is off to a successful start.

Yes, the Indoor Sports Complex needs some attention, or as we like to say some "T.L.C." We are currently developing a five-year strategic plan for the department that will help us prioritize our facility projects and needs for the future. Certainly, our basketball programs are very important to the University and having a venue commensurate with the high expectations we have for them is a priority.

Currently, we are researching various scoreboard options, costs for improved seating and an improved public address system. At the end of the day it comes down to fund-raising. Consequently, the Department of Athletics, in conjunction with the SBU community, is currently embarking on a very aggressive fund-raising campaign to address the needs of our department and university.

The goals of the campaign will be to:

  • Improve the quality of our athletic program (via facilities and scholarship.

  • Preserve our national leadership in higher education

  • Supply scholarship aid that keeps our students among the most diversely talented in the country

  • Foster the growth of the regional economy while training a skilled work force for Long Island

If we accomplish some of the goals set forth, I am confident changes to the ISC will occur sooner rather than later. Thanks again for the e-mail and for your support of Stony Brook University Athletics.

Question: Hey I just want to know why your school doesn't have a golf program. I'm in 9th grade and want to go to go to a college that is close to my house and has a golf team. I really want to go to Stony Brook when I graduate but you guys don't have a golf team. Long Island has some of the nicest courses in the US and if you can get a team going it could be a success. Please E- Mail me back to tell me what you think. Ryan Mahlstadt - Huntington NY

Answer: Hi Ryan - Thank you for your e-mail. You are correct on both accounts. At this time we do not have a Men's Golf program and there are many beautiful courses on Long Island. However, due to the financial constraints that the department currently faces, we are not planning to add a Men's Golf program anytime in the near future. While I agree that a golf team at SBU could be a great success, we are committed to investing in our existing programs in order to experience success. Once that is completed, we will re-evaluate the future programmatic needs of our department.

In short, our immediate plans for the Department of Athletics do not call for the addition of another men's sport program at this juncture. That being said, there is always a chance it could happen somewhere in our department's future. Best of luck with everything and if you would like to come to one of our games, please let me know.

Thanks you again for your e-mail and Happy New Year!

    Go Seawolves!
