Five Seawolves Named SUNY Chancellor Award Winners

May 2, 2006

Albany, N.Y. - Five Stony Brook student-athletes - Leonora Joy, Shaun Krawitz, Vladimir Sreckovic, Kim Harris and Cindy Bennett - were honored as 2006 SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athletes, State University of New York Chancellor John R. Ryan announced on Monday.

The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the Division I, Division III and NJCAA levels. Across these levels, 70 student athletes in 19 different sports from 28 SUNY schools were selected.

"The Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the most selective and prestigious awards bestowed by SUNY, because it speaks to the hard work and dedication our student athletes put forth in classrooms and on the fields, courts and courses where they compete throughout the year," said Chancellor Ryan. "Their success also speaks volumes about the quality of programs and curriculum of SUNY's campuses, coaches, faculty, and students. I commend the recipients as well as their coaches for this extraordinary achievement."

Bennett, a senior from Canton, Mich., on the women's soccer team, was the America East Goalkeeper of the Year in 2004 and Rookie of the Year in 2002. A first team all-conference selection as a junior, she finished her career as the program's all-time leader with 23 shutouts while also ranking in saves, goals against average and save percentage. A four-time member of the America East Fall Honor Roll, she holds a 3.46 GPA and will graduate in May with a degree in sociology and women's studies.

Harris, a senior from Farmingdale, N.Y., on the women's swimming and diving team, holds school records in the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes and is a member of school record-setting teams in the 200 and 400-yard medley and 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays. She wrapped up her career with five top six finishes at America East Championships in the 100-yard backstroke (third), 200 backstroke (sixth), 200 freestyle relay (fourth), 200 medley relay (fifth) and 400 medley relay (fifth). A three-time member of the America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll, she holds a 3.99 GPA and will graduate in May with a degree in pharmacology.

Joy, a senior from Auckland, New Zealand, on the women's cross country and track and field teams, is a four-time America East all-conference and three-time All-Northeast Region finisher in cross country. The 2005 America East Cross Country Champion, Joy has earned conference titles in the 3000-meter steeplechase, 3000-meters and the Distance Medley Relay and owns seven school records. A four time member of the America East Honor Roll, she holds a 3.2 GPA and will graduate in May with a degree in business.

Krawitz, a sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand, on the men's cross country and track and field teams, earned all-conference honors after finishing third at the 2005 America East Cross Country Championships. The school record holder in the 3000-meter steeplechase, he won the 2005 Metropolitan Championship in the event while finishing seventh at America East Championships. A two-time member of the America East Honor Roll, he currently holds a 3.43 GPA in geology.

Sreckovic, a sophomore from Jagodina, Serbia and Montenegro, on the men's swimming and diving team, posted a pair of top eight finishes at the 2006 America East Championships, touching seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke. A two-year member of the America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll, he holds a 3.98 GPA in political science.

Scholar-Athletes maintain a grade point average of 3.64 or higher and are selected by the Athletic Directors at each level of play. Region 3 and Region 15 of the NJCAA selected recipients for two-year schools; and the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and Athletic Directors from the Independent Institutions selected student athletes participating in Division III Programs.
