Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Office of Student-Athlete Development recently hosted its first annual Career Fair. Local, national and international businesses attended the three-hour event held in the Goldstein Family Student-Athlete Development Center where Stony Brook student-athletes were encouraged to speak with representatives about potential careers and internships in their companies.
"The Career Fair was a great opportunity for me to hone my communication skills and it allowed me to gain experience and to network with successful companies", said Stony Brook senior Robert Trenkle (Commack, N.Y.), of the men's lacrosse team "I am very thankful to my academic advisors and the Athletics Department for hosting such a great event."
As a result of the success of this event, the Athletics Department is planning a second Career Fair to be held in the spring. The Office of Student-Athlete Development has instituted a comprehensive career development curriculum as part of their LifeSkills programs for all Stony Brook student-athletes. In addition to the career fair, student-athletes experience a four-year curriculum which also includes leadership training, diversity education, resume writing, time management skills and mock interviews.
"The Career Fair was an excellent opportunity for our student-athletes to explore various career paths with multiple companies in the same room", said Assistant Athletics Director Courtney Sanfelippo. "This event was one of many that are designed to guide our student-athletes through the process from career exploration to post-graduate pursuits. I am proud of our student-athletes for using these opportunities to prepare for life after their time as a Stony Brook student-athlete is completed."
