Watson Leads Seawolves to 68-53 Win Over UMBC

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Kelly Watson scored a career-high 29 points as she led four Seawolves in double-figures as the Stony Brook women's basketball team won its eighth game in nine tries, 68-53, over the visiting UMBC Retrievers on Wednesday night at Stony Brook University Arena. With the win the Seawolves improve to 12-10 overall and 8-2 in America East play. UMBC falls to 10-13, 2-7.

"Kelly was outstanding and I am pleased with how we shot the ball tonight," said Stony Brook head coach Maura McHugh. "We need to limit our turnovers, but overall I am pleased with our performance tonight."

Watson led the way for the Seawolves in the opening stanza, scoring 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range.

Watson's three-pointer from the corner with 8:22 to play gave the Seawolves a four-point lead at 21-17 as Stony Brook began to pull away in the first half. All five starters scored in the opening half as Stony Brook built its lead to ten at 36-26 heading into the locker room.

The Retrievers came out of the break red hot, as they opened the second half on a 9-0 run to cut the Stony Brook lead to one at 36-35. Stony Brook answered with a run of its own, going on a 21-8 spurt over 13 minutes in which UMBC went just 3-of-15 from the field. UMBC got as close as eight at 57-49 but Stony Brook pulled away for a 68-53 win.

Watson, the Seawolves' America East player of the game, finished 12-for-16 from the floor including 5-of-8 from behind the arc. Leah Getz recorded her third double-double and second against UMBC this season with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Jessica Smith had 12 points and Mykeema Ford added 10. The Seawolves shot a season high 54 percent from the floor.

For the Retrievers, Kristin Drabyn scored 13 points and was named America East co-player of the game. Amanda Robinson also scored 13 points on the night.

Stony Brook returns to action when they travel to face Boston University on Saturday, February 10. The game can be seen locally on Fox Sports New York and tip-off is slated for 12:00 p.m.
