Prior to the meet against Boston University on November 15th, Stony Brook athletics and the local swimming community came together to honor one of the greatest coaches in Stony Brook history, John DeMarie.
A graduate of Florida State University and Adelphi, coach DeMarie began his career at Farmingdale High School, where he won the Nassau County Championship.
His time at Stony Brook began in 1978, when he led the men's team to a 5-7 mark. Less than 10 years later, in 1987, coach DeMarie recorded the first and only undefeated season in Stony Brook history, leading the Seawolves to a 10-0 record.
During his tenure, he guided Stony Brook to a 104-50 dual meet record, two Metropolitan Conference Championships, two SUNY Centers Championships and four Metropolitan Conference Dual Meet Titles. In 1988, Coach DeMarie was named the Metropolitan Coach of the Year and in 2006 he was inducted into the Stony Brook Hall of Fame.
For all of his accomplishments at Stony Brook University, Coach DeMarie also found time to be an active member in the local swim community. He has been a member of the Association of Suffolk County Swim Coaches for 28 years and has worked with the North Shore Aquatic Association for nearly 30 years. He has coached numerous junior and senior national qualifiers, most notably David Kahn who became the top 200-yard Individual Medley swimmer in America under coach DeMarie's tutelage and still holds 2 University Pool records.
In recognition of all that Coach DeMarie has given, the Stony Brook athletic department, it's alumni and the local swimming community honored him with the John DeMarie Scoreboard which now hangs in University Pool.
