Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University had 83 student-athletes honored by the America East Conference when it announced its 2007 Fall Academic Honor Roll. The 83 Stony Brook honorees, each who earned at least a 3.0 GPA to qualify for this honor, were the third-highest among the conference member schools and represented 71 percent of Stony Brook's fall student-athletes. In addition, 40 Seawolves earned a spot on the Commissioner's Honor Roll which required a 3.5 GPA for recognition.
Stony Brook's women's cross country team, which won the America East Championship and competed in the NCAA Championships in the fall, and the women's soccer team each had 21 honorees. Men's soccer placed 16 names on the list, followed by 14 for men's cross country and 10 for volleyball. A complete list of the Stony Brook honorees can be found by clicking here.
There were several other exceptional academic accomplishments for Stony Brook student-athletes during the fall 2007 semester. Among the achievements, Stony Brook celebrated its highest GPA since joining the America East Conference in 2001 when the Seawolf teams posted a cumulative 3.11 GPA. A total of 14 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall 2007 semester. Sixteen of Stony Brook's athletic programs earned a team GPA above a 3.0. "This is a testament to Jim Fiore and the entire athletic department's commitment to the academic mission", stated Jerry Stein, Stony Brook University's Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. "They have set high expectations and our Stony Brook student-athletes have met the challenge." The final moment of celebration for the fall semester came when the Stony Brook Department of Athletics recognized 19 of its student-athletes who received their degrees during winter commencement ceremonies.
