West Point, N.Y. -
Stony Brook's women's tennis team opened its spring schedule today with a pair of dual matches against Army and Connecticut in West Point. The Black Knights swept the doubles matches and then went on to down the Seawolves by a 5-2 score. UConn then defeated the Seawolves by the same score later in the day. Senior Victoria Vovsha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and junior Erica Federgreen (Scottsdale, Ariz.) picked up the points for Stony Brook in the season opener against Army.
Army teams won all three doubles matches to take the first point, taking all three by identical 8-4 scores.
Singles play saw a number of close matches, with three of the six going to a third set. Vovsha picked up her victory after dropping the first set of her match at No. 6 singles to Bridie Burke, 6-0. She then stormed back to take the final two and the match by scores of 6-2 and 6-4. Sophomores Claudia Sanua (Bryanston, South Africa) and Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) also went three sets in their matches but came out on the short end of the final score.
Federgreen took her match at No. 4 singles in straight sets over Paige Ford, winning 6-3, 6-2 to pick up the first point of the day for Stony Brook.
Against Connecticut the doubles matches were all close. At the No. 1 position Sanua and Federgreen took a hard fought 9-7 win over Kelley LoRusso and Ali Campitiello. The No. 2 match was even closer, but this time it was the Huskies who came out on top by a 9-8 score. UConn also got the win at No. 3, an 8-5 decision, giving the Huskies the first point of the day.
Stony Brook picked up both of its singles wins at the top two flights. Rodolfi took care of her opponent, LoRusso, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Sanua dropped the first set at the No. 2 flight, but came back to take the next two sets to capture her first win of the spring with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-8 victory. UConn had the upper hand in the final four singles matches, however, taking three of the four in straight sets to capture the win.
Up next for Stony Brook will be a trip to Hanover, New Hampshire where the Seawolves will battle Dartmouth on Saturday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m.
