Sophomore Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) led Stony Brook University's track & field teams with a record setting first-place finish in the women's 3,000-meter run at the Gotham Cup on Friday afternoon. Van Dalen was one of eight Seawolves to post a top-ten finish at the meet. She completed the race in a time of 9:26.68, easily beating the previous school record of 9:38.71. Her time also qualifies her for the ECAC Championships and is an NCAA Provisional qualifying time.
In the men's 3,000-meter run junior Daire Bermingham (Portmarnock, Ireland) took third, with a time of 8:21.99, which is fast enough to qualify for the IC4A Championships. Also having a third-place finish for Stony Brook was freshman Hayley Green (Wellington, New Zealand), who was the third runner to cross in the women's 5,000-meter in 17:40.12.
Rounding out the top-ten finishes for the women's team were junior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland) and sophomore Leanne Skrabacz (West Seneca, N.Y.). Huet took seventh in the mile (5:06.80) while Skrabacz placed tenth in the 3,000-meter (10:58.66).
On the track, junior Brandon Leung (Rego Park, N.Y.) crossed seventh in the men's 800-meter (2:00.35), while in the field two Seawolves placed within the top-ten. Sophomore Alex Raffio (Crugers, N.Y.) took ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.84 meters and freshman Matthew Carnes (Hillsborough, N.J.) placed sixth in the shot put with a distance of 12.62 meters.
The Seawolves will return to the Armory on January 23rd to compete in the Albany Invitational, which is set to begin at 12:30 p.m.
