Sophomore Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) broke a school record in her third-consecutive meet when she finished the mile in 4:40.26 at the Giegengack Invitational on Saturday. She crossed 12 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and missed posting an automatic NCAA qualifying time by just 2.26 seconds. Overall, the Seawolves had nine top-10 finishes, including a second record-breaking performance by junior Daire Bermingham (Portmarnock, Ireland) in the men's mile.
Van Dalen's record-breaking streak began on January 16th, when she smashed the 3,000-meter record and posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:26.68 at the Gotham Cup in New York, N.Y. She then went on to break the 1,000-meter mark on January 30th at the METS Championships. Her time in the mile gives her her second NCAA qualifying time and third ECAC qualifying time this season.
The women's team received another top-five finish from junior Laura Huet (Carrickfergus, Ireland) who crossed fourth in the 3,000-meter. Huet completed the race in a season-best time of 9:46.61, qualifying for the ECAC Championship. Also posting an ECAC qualifying time was Sophomore Carolina Cortes (Woodmere, N.Y.) who took sixth in the 1,000-meter (2:56.07), while freshmen Justine Noel (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Christina Johnson (Elmont, N.Y.) finished eighth in the 500-meter (1:18.47) and seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (9.49), respectively.
On the men's side, Bermingham broke the men's record in the mile, completing the race in 4:08.98, fast enough for third-place overall. Junior Alex Felce (Stroud, England) took eighth in that race, crossing in 4:12.41. Both Bermingham and Felce qualified for the IC4A Championships with their times.
Senior Merlon Pinnock (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had the men's highest finish, taking first in the 500-meter (1:05.43), while junior Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand) finished sixth in the 3,000-meter with an IC4A time of 8:25.54.
This was the final tune for the Seawolves before the America East Championships which begin February 20th in Boston, Massachusetts.
