New York, N.Y. - After winning its first five dual matches of the season, Stony Brook University's women's tennis team saw its win streak come to an end this afternoon. America East foe Boston University ended the Seawolves streak with a 5-2 win in a match played at Columbia University.
Things went Stony Brook's way at the start of the match during doubles play as the Seawolves won two of the three matches to take the first point of the afternoon. Junior Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman Katherine Hanson (Smithtown, N.Y.) started things off on the right foot for SBU, taking an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles the team of freshman Prerana Appineni (Hyderabad, India) and freshman Anna Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden) fought off their opponents from BU, taking an 8-6 victory that gave the Seawolves the point.
In singles play, however, things turned in Boston University's favor, as the Terriers took six of the seven matches. The lone win for Stony Brook (5-1) came at No. 6 where senior Erica Federgreen (Scottsdale, Ariz.) rallied from a set down to defeat Yana Sadovskaya 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Two other matches went to three sets. At No. 3 Appineni came back after dropping the first set to take the second only to see her opponent, Petra Santini, come back to take the match. Freshman Gayatri Krishnan (Chennai, India) won her first set at No. 4 but could not hold on to her advantage as her opponent came back for the win.
Stony Brook will not return to the courts until Friday, March 13 when it will travel to Pennsylvania to take on Lehigh in a match scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
