Stony Brook’s women’s tennis team got off to a strong start against America East opponent Binghamton today, but the Bearcats won four of the six singles matches to come away with a 4-3 win over the Seawolves. Freshmen Ann Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Prerana Appineni (Hyderabad, India) picked up singles victories for Stony Brook.
In the opening doubles action Stony Brook came out on top with wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 positions to take the first point of the afternoon. The team of junior Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman Salome Mkervalidze (Brewster, N.Y.) got past their opponents at No. 2 for an 8-5 victory, while the duo of freshman Gayatri Krishnan (Chennai, India) and senior Erica Federgreen (Scottsdale, Ariz.) clinched the point with an 8-6 win at No. 3.
Binghamton, however, came out in singles play and won the matches at Nos. 1, 2 and 5 in straight sets to move to within a point of the win. Appineni needed three sets at No. 3 to hold off Yulia Smirnova in a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory for the Seawolves. Pieschl also needed three sets in her match at No. 6, fending off Danyelle Shapiro, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5). In the match at No. 4, Krishnan took the first set against Marina Bykovskaya only to see her opponent come back to claim a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win that gave Binghamton the clinching fourth point.
Stony Brook will play again next week at home when it will host Long Island rival Hofstra on Tuesday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m.
