Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's Department of Athletics administrative staff grew by one today with the announcement by Director of Athletics Jim Fiore that Stephen Clacherty has been hired as Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance.
Clacherty, who brings more than six years of NCAA compliance experience with him to Stony Brook, has been the Assistant Director of Compliance at the University of Miami in Florida since August of 2006. While there he was responsible for monitoring financial aid, housing, and meal plans. He also coordinated drug testing, oversaw student-athlete employment and administered the National Letter of Intent program. Additionally, he gained experience with student-athlete eligibility issues, monitoring camps and clinics, and evaluating the recruiting activities of the Miami coaching staff. "We are pleased to welcome Stephen to the Stony Brook family", said Fiore. "Leading our compliance team is of great importance to us as an institution and we are confident that Stephen brings the leadership and integrity that is needed to ensure our continued success in this area."
Before moving to Miami, Clacherty spent two years at Seton Hall University as a compliance assistant. There he worked with establishing playing and practice seasons, tracked countable athletic activities and helped manage athletic aid and the NLI program. He also produced the department's monthly compliance newsletter and served as a sport supervisor for the Pirate women's tennis, softball and volleyball programs. Clacherty gained his start in compliance as a member of the athletics staff at Syracuse University from January 2003 to May 2004.
A 2004 graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland with a degree in sport management, Clacherty received his Master's degree in public relations from the University of Miami in December of 2008.
