West Point, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's women's tennis team won its sixth straight match on Friday night, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3. The Seawolves improved to 8-1 with the victory.
Stony Brook started the match out by easily earning the doubles point. Senior Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) and sophomore Prerana Appineni (Hyderabad, India) won, 8-1, at No. 1 while sophomore Anna Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden) and freshman Aylin Mehter (Massapequa, N.Y.) coasted to an 8-3 victory at No. 2. At No. 3, junior Fanny Charliquart (Gueugnon, France) and sophomore Salome Mkervalidze (Brewster, N.Y.) breezed to an 8-4 win.
Fairleigh Dickinson won three of the top four singles matches with Pieschl claiming the only victory for the Seawolves as she defeated Julia Prantl at No. 3, 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. Rodolfi and Appineni each lost tough three-setters at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, with Rodolfi losing 7-4 in a third-set tiebreak.
But the Seawolves dominated at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, dropping just two combined games, to earn their sixth straight victory. Freshman Nini Lagvilava (Tbilisi, Georgia) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5, while junior Gayatri Krishnan (Chennai, India) did not lose a game in defeating Jessica DeCarlos.
Stony Brook returns to action on March 13, when they will travel to take on Cornell.
