Five Seawolves Named SUNY Chancellor Award Winners

May 3, 2010

Albany, N.Y. - Five Stony Brook University student-athletes were honored when State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher announced the 2009-10 Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Awards on Monday. The award recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the Division I, Division III and NJCAA levels. Senior Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.), juniors Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand), Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia) and Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) and sophomore Gayatri Krishnan (Chennai, India) were the Stony Brook honorees.

Viola concluded a brilliant four-year career for the Seawolves women's soccer team this season as she posted five shutouts. She leaves Stony Brook with program records for shutouts (26) and games played by a goalkeeper (70). The 2008 America East Goalkeeper of the Year and 2009 second team all-conference selection finished second in program history with 467 saves.

Van Dalen is a three time All-America East selection in cross country, having finished in the top 10 in three America East Championships. As a sophomore, Van Dalen competed at the NCAA Championships in Indiana, finishing in 91st place. A two time All-Academic team member, she won the ECAC Championships in November of 2009. An all-region selection as a junior, Van Dalen is a two time recipient of the USTFCCCA's All-Academic Team award.

A member of the men's lacrosse team, McBride is Stony Brook's second all-time leading scorer with 132 goals in just three seasons. Recently named to the 2010 Tewaaraton Watch List, McBride leads the country in shooting percentage (.561), is second in goals per game (3.54) and eighth in points per game (4.0). Against Binghamton on April 17, McBride scored seven goals, making him the first player in school history with three straight seasons of 40 goals or more. This season he's scored 46 goals despite not scoring in three games. He owns two of the highest goal scoring games in NCAA history (10 and 8).

A two-time America East All-Academic selection in men's tennis, Rummel has posted 22 singles victories this season including 11 at No. 1. Last year, he went 20-10 in singles play and as a freshman he was named second All-America East at No. 2 singles.

Krishnan has posted an 19-5 record in women's tennis singles action in 2009-10 and has teamed with sophomore Anna Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden) to go 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. A 2009 first team All-America East at No. 6 singles, Krishan went 14-3 overall in singles play in 2008-09 and led the team with an .824 winning percentage.
