Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's tennis team defeated the Fairfield Stags, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon at University Courts. The Seawolves improve to 5-4 with the victory.
Playing with just five players, the Seawolves needed to win both doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Junior Nini Lagvilava (Tbilisi, Georgia) and freshman Polina Movchan (Kiev, Ukraine) won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles before seniors Katherine Hanson (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Salome Mkervalidze (Brewster, N.Y.) teamed to win 8-4 at the No. 2 spot to give SBU the 1-0 lead.
Stony Brook then won four of the five contested singles matches to earn the victory. Lagvilava and Movchan won in straight sets at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.
Mkervalidze won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and junior Chloe Pike (Bristol, England) won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, hosting Fordham.
