NEW YORK -- Christina Melian of the Stony Brook women's track & field team finished second overall and first among collegiate runners in the 3,000-meter run, and Chris Hand of the men's team was third in the weight throw Friday at the NYC Gotham Cup at the Armory Track & Field Center.
Melian posted a personal best time of 9:30.50, which qualified her for the ECACs, and Hand's throw of 17.73 meters was an IC4A qualifier.
"This was a solid first meet," track & field head coach Andy Ronan said. "We had encouraging performances from Chris and Christina. This meet will help move our fitness level along, so I am looking forward to some good results over the next few weeks."
Alex Lopresti, Bradley Amazon, Thomas Wimmers and Michael Watts teamed up for a first-place finish in 10:19.78 in the men's distance medley relay, narrowly missing the IC4A qualifying time of 10:19.00.
Elizabeth Caldwell ran the 3,000-meters in 10:02.56 for sixth, and Tara Peck was seventh in 10:16.06.
Kaylyn Gordon secured eighth in the long jump (5.60 meters)
The women's distance medley relay team placed fifth in 12:35.96.
Tyler Frigge was ninth in the men's 3,000-meters in 8:31.82.
Stony Brook will return to the Armory next Friday to compete in the Metro Team Challenge.
