Sophomore Nadia Smergut (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Elizabeth Tsvetkov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted straight-set victories in singles play to lead the Stony Brook women's tennis team to a 5-2 win over St. John's at the National Tennis Center Thursday.
Smergut earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Zofia Stainsz and Tsvetkov was victorious over Irina Preotescu, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5.
Despite losing the doubles point, the Seawolves (7-1) won five of the six singles matches.
Senior Polina Movchan (Kiev, Ukraine) rallied after losing the first set, easily defeating Nastya Polyakova, 6-1, in the third set.
Freshman Kristina Vozniak (Kiev, Ukraine) beat Anna Morozova, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 2 and junior Louise Badoche (Paris, France) claimed a 6-4, 6-7, 10-2 win at No. 6 singles.
Stony Brook will return to action at home against NJIT on Saturday, March 28.
