Providence, R.I. - The Stony Brook women's tennis team earned its first victory over a nationally-ranked program as the Seawolves beat No. 43 Brown, 5-2, Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

"We went into this weekend with a mindset that this is our only chance this season to beat a ranked team," head coach Gary Glassman said. "Yesterday, we fought hard against Harvard, but didn't take advantage of all the opportunities. Today, we did. We definitely came out to win, and the girls gave it everything they had. I couldn't be more proud of them for this program-defining victory."

Stony Brook (6-1) captured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3. The duos of senior Polina Movchan (Kiev, Ukraine) and freshman Yana Nikolaeva (Thornhill, Ontario) and freshmen Kristina Vozniak (Kiev, Ukraine) and Elizabeth Tsvetkov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took home victories with a pair of6-3 victories.

Movchan and Vozniak carried the Seawolves at the top of the lineup during singles play. Movchan beat Dayna Lord, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Vozniak came out on top, rallying for a three-set victory over Alyza Benotto, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8).

Tsvetkov also came back after losing the first set, topping Ammu Mandalap, 6-3, in the third. Junior Louise Badoche (Paris, France) won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Stony Brook took on its second straight ranked opponent, losing to No. 36 Harvard, 5-2, Friday night. The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point. Tsvetkov captured SBU's only singles win, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 5.

The Seawolves will face St. John's on Thursday, March 12 at 12 p.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center.
