Stony Brook looks strong in pair of meets

The Stony Brook men's and women's track and field traveled to Rhode Island for a pair of meets. The Seawolves competed in the Providence Invitational Friday and in the Brown Invitational Saturday.

For the second week in a row, Stony Brook broke a school record in the 4x100-meter relay. Freshman Courtney Warden, sophomore Shi-Anne Humes, junior Daneen Small, freshman Kaylyn Gordon and sophomore Moriah Blackman secured the win in 47.81 at the Friar Invite, topping the school mark of 48.34 set at the Colonial Relays.

The Seawolves dominated the 100-meter dash with Humes placing first in 12.57. Gordon and Warden placed second and third, respectively, in 12.82 and 13.18.

Stony Brook also claimed the top three spots in the 200-meter dash. Blackman finished first in 26.88. Small followed in 27.04, and senior Shannon Grogan was third in 27.20.

Grogan also took third in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.37.

Sophomore Elizabeth Caldwell won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:04.58, and junior Megan Liu was first in the long jump and triple jump at 5.07 meters and 10.79 meters, respectively.

Freshman Talia Guevara was the runner-up in the 3,000-meters in 10:17.17, and sophomore Olivia Ritchie posted a time of 10:19.34 and finished third.

At Brown, Gordon won the long jump at 5.61 meters and Liu was fourth at 5.30 meters. Gordon clocked in at 12.40 ticks for third in the 100-meter dash, and Warden posted a time of 12.70 seconds and was fifth.

Warden was first in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.40 seconds, and Guevara was the winner in the mile in a time of 5:12.16.

In the 3,000-meters, Christine Eisenberg and Molly Persky crossed third and fifth, respectively, in 10:18.73 and 10:42.90.

The 4x100 relay squad consisting of Warden, Humes, Small and Gordon finished in 48.59 seconds and notched third.

On the men's side, senior Daniel Denis tallied an IC4A-qualifying time of 14:23.56 in the 5,000-meters at the Friar Invite. The time was a personal record.

Junior Lamar Hayes clocked in at 11.16 seconds and won the 100-meter dash and was first in the 200-meter dash in 22.93. Freshmen Michael Tristano and Derrick Wang finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-meter dash 11.45 and 11.62. Sophomore Jarrett Button was second in the 200-meter dash in 23.35, and Tristano was third in 23.66.

Button took first in the 400-meter dash in 51.41, and sophomore Jonathan Samuel was third in 51.93.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Wang, Hayes, Tristano, Button and senior Adam Davies secured the top spot in 43.05.

Senior Matthew Granata and junior Bradley Amazan placed second and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run in 1:54.11 and 1:55.29.

At the Brown Invitational, senior Tyler Frigge placed first in the 3,000-meters in 8:25.46. Classmate Mitchell Kun came in fourth in 8:31.42, and freshman Daniel Connelly was seventh in 8:51.94.

Hayes was the runner-up in the long jump at 6.73 meters and in the 200-meter dash in 22.43 ticks. He placed sixth in the 100-meter dash in 10.97 seconds.

Junior Alex Lopresti took second in the 800-meter dash in 1:55.28, and junior Tyler Keys was second in the mile in 4:24.01.

Senior Chris Hand placed third in the javelin throw at 53.99 meters and sixth in the hammer throw at 52.01 meters

Granata posted a time of 49.45 seconds and claimed third in the 400-meter dash, and Amazan was eighth in 51.15.

Wang, Hayes, Tristano and Davies combined for a fourth-place finish in 43.01 seconds in the 4x100 relay.

Stony Brook will host the Wolfie Invitational Saturday at University Track.
