Stony Brook Athletics hosts annual Wolfie Awards banquet

The Stony Brook Athletic Department held its annual awards ceremony, "The Wolfies" on Monday night in the Island Federal Credit Union Arena. Senior Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) from softball took home the "Female Athlete of the Year" award, while Male Athlete of the Year was given to junior Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) of men's basketball for the second consecutive year. 

Green enjoyed a historic season for the regular-season champion softball team, setting single-season school records in home runs (19) and rbi (52) en route to America East Player of the Year honors.

Warney led the nation in double-doubles and total rebounds to earn the America East Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season. The junior averaged 16.4 points per game and 11.7 rebounds per game and was selected to NABC All-District first team as well as being named a Lou Henson Award finalist. 

The Female Rookie of the Year award went to Kylie Ohlmiller (West Islip, N.Y.) from women's lacrosse. Ohlmiller was the America East Rookie of the Year and ranked in the top-five nationally in assists (44) and points (86) to earn herself a spot on the Tewaaraton Watch List, the award handed to the best player in the sport. She won the America East Rookie of the Week award six times. 

Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) of the baseball team took home the Male Rookie of the Year wolfie. He has started every game for the America East regular-season champions, twice winning America East Rookie of the Week. He is currently batting .310 with 48 hits. 

Senior Cassandra Dix (Northamptonshire, U.K.) of women's tennis and senior Eric Speakman (Napier, New Zealand) of cross country and track and field were the winners of the Female and Male Scholar-Athlete awards. Dix, a key piece to the women's tennis America East championship winning team, holds a 4.0 cumulative gpa as a biochemistry major. Speakman, a double major in business and economics, boasts a 3.9 cumulative gpa. He was the 8k champion in the America East Cross Country Championship in the fall and the winner of the Outstading Academic Achievement Award. 

New to this year's awards banquet were the Team of the Year awards. Women's lacrosse took home the honor on the women's side, finishing the season 18-2 and winning its third consecutive America East title. The baseball team, who just wrapped up the America East regular-season title with a sweep of UMass Lowell over the weekend, took home the men's award. 

Junior Christina Melian (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior Mike Rooney (East Islip, N.Y.) were presented the Athletic Director's Award by Stony Brook Athletic Director Shawn Heilbron for their embodiment of Stony Brook athletic's ideals and core values. Melian, the runner-up in the America East Cross Country Championships was an all-region selection. Additionally, she was named an America East Scholar-Athlete and landed on the All-Academic team. Rooney helped guide a turnaround that saw the men's lacrosse team return to the America East championship game. He was a first team all-conference selection, leading Division I with 111 points and finishing his career as Stony Brook's career leader in points and assists. 

Junior Melissa Phelan (Saddle Brook, N.J) of the softball team was the recipient of the Dave Alexander Courage Award, which is given to a member of Stony Brook Athletics who has demonstrated uncommon bravery in the face of adversity. Phelan lost The award is named in honor of the late Dave Alexander, who coached swimming & diving at Stony Brook for 32 years.



Christina Fluman (Pittsford, N.Y) of women's soccer and Adam Davies ((Farmingdale, N.Y) of men's track and field were the winners of the Seawolves Choice Award, as voted by their fellow student-athletes. The award recognizes an athlete's indomitable spirit, boundless enthusiasm, tenacious confidence and devotion to Stony Brook Athletics at all times

Davies also won the Faculty-Achievement Award along with former swimmer Emily Cheng for their achievements in the classroom. 

Speakman, Melian, senior Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, Ontario) of the baseball team, senior Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) of the softball team, senior Christian Ricard (Spencer, Mass.) of football and sopohmore Courtney Murphy (Shirley, N.Y.) from women's lacrosse team were recipients of the SUNY Chancellor Awards for outstanding achievement in athletics and academics among SUNY's Div. I schools in their respective sports.



Senator Kenneth P. LaValle was named the recipient of the Shirley Strum Kenny Service Award for outstanding service towards Stony Brook Athletics and its student-athletes. 



In addition to individual awards, Most Valuable Player and Coaches Awards were handed out to each of Stony Brook's 18 competing varsity teams.
