Together We Transform Thursday: March 31, 2016

March 31, 2016

The glass doors of our administrative suite in the Indoor Sports Complex serve as a unique window into the lives of our student-athletes.

Often when I am standing in the main area of the suite, I see student-athletes walk by on their way to class or practice. Sometimes they stop in to say hello. Other times they come in with a question ("when is the new indoor facility going to be here?" or "is it possible for our team to have the smoke machine when we come out of the tunnel the way that football does?"). In certain cases, life events or job prospects are shared.

Regardless of the reason, our student-athletes know that our doors are always open to them. In fact, stop by next week and you will likely find members of our men's soccer team watching a UEFA Champions League match on the television in the main area of the suite. It gives me such happiness to know that they feel comfortable enough to come in, take a seat on our couch (or the floor, depending upon how many of them are there) and watch a game.

The energy that our student-athletes provide is the motor that makes this department run, and it serves as an inspiration to all of us in the administrative suite every day.

Play Ball!

As a baseball fan, I love Opening Day. The fact that it coincides with the Final Four is simply a gift straight out of sports heaven.

The new season means that our eyes turn to Miami and San Diego where we will follow Stony Brook alums Tom Koehler and Travis Jankowski. Tom has been a workhorse for the Marlins as a reliable member of the starting rotation while Travis is poised to take over as the everyday centerfielder for the Padres.

Nick Tropeano, who worked out at Stony Brook most of the winter, is part of a deep pitching staff with the Los Angeles Angels and will soon be back in the major leagues!

Stars (of Stony Brook) Shine Bright

We're very proud of the exclusive club that we call Major League Seawolves and are excited to honor charter member Joe Nathan next month at the Stars of Stony Brook Gala on April 20 at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. Joe will be honored along with Glenn and Eva Dubin at the event, which in addition to supporting funding for student scholarships, will raise money for the Stony Brook Baseball program and the Dubin Challenge for the Indoor Training Center.

It's an event not to be missed! To purchase tickets or to learn more please visit stonybrook.edu/gala.

Together We Transform!

Warm regards,

Shawn
