Seawolves men and women finish fifth at Metropolitan Championships

 - The Stony Brook outdoor track & field teams competed over the weekend at the Metropolitan Championships, with the Seawolves men and women both finishing fifth out of 12 teams.

Senior Allyson Laporte (New Milford, Conn.) won the women’s javelin with a throw of 124-5/37.93m along with an eighth-pace finish in the shot put (34-0.0/10.36m).

​“The only thing that can be said about this meet is that our athletes survived the wind and rain. It was not conducive to good performances, but the athletes we put out competed the best they could under the circumstances.”

Highlights
- Freshman Nikki Fogarty (Holbrook, N.Y.) finished third in the women’s 100 hurdles (15.38) and eighth in the women’s 200m (25.66).
- Junior Oscar Mercado (Medford, N.Y.) came in third in the men’s 110 hurdles (15.99).
- Freshman Conor Kimmey (Voorheesville, N.Y.) finished fourth in the men’s 400 hurdles (57.64), while junior Jarrett Button (Doylestown, Pa.) was eighth (1:00.26).
- Freshman Dara Smith (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) placed fifth in the women’s 100 hurdles (16.52) and sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:07.08).
- Sophomore Shanee Grant (Bronx, N.Y.) and freshman Lauren Wangenstein (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) placed fifth and sixth in the women’s 400m, with Grant coming in fifth in 59.04 and Wangenstein behind her at 1:01.07.
- Senior Jonathan Samuel (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) finished sixth in the men’s 800m (1:59.04).
- Sophomore Courtney Warden (Newburgh, N.Y.) was sixth in the women’s 100 hurdles (16.55).
- Freshman Melissa Riback (West Babylon, N.Y.) placed seventh in the women’s 400 hurdles (1:09.78).
- Freshman Shane Harris (St. James, N.Y.) was seventh in the men’s 100m (11.67).
- Freshman Abass Braimah (Bronx, N.Y.) was sixth in the men’s 200m (23.61), while freshman Michael Thompson (Wallkill, N.Y.) was eighth (23.87).
- Sophomore Darian Sorouri (Wilmington, Del.) placed fourth in the men’s 3000 steeplechase (9:44.46) while freshman Nick Cruz was sixth (9:46.86).
- The women’s 4x100 relay team of freshman Sarah Militano (Miller Place, N.Y.), sophomore Kaylyn Gordon (Spring Valley, N.Y.), Fogarty and freshman Chinque Thompson (Toronto, Ontario) was third (47.99).
- The quartet of Harris, freshman Kevon White (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.), freshman Bradley Pierre (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and freshman Yanik Martin (New City, N.Y.) placed third in the men’s 4x100 relay (43.46).
- Pierre was fifth in the men’s long jump (21-0.75/6.42m), while freshman Brendon Alerte (Westbury, N.Y.) placed seventh (18-4.25/5.59m).
- Michael Thompson placed fourth in the men’s triple jump (39-10.0/12.14m), while Alerte recorded a sixth-place mark of 38-1.25/11.61m.
- Gordon placed seventh in the women’s long jump (17-10.75/5.45m), while freshman Lauren Glancy (East Northport, N.Y.) was eighth (17-1.25/5.21m).
- Sophomore Allison Ross (East Hanover, N.J.) placed sixth in the women’s shot put (35-3.25/10.75m), sixth in the discus (113-0/34.44m) and seventh in the javelin (89-11/27.40m).
- Sophomore Joseph Stanco (Bethpage, N.Y.) was fifth in the men’s shot put (39-6.0/12.04m) and eighth in the discus (120-1/36.60m).

The Seawolves will travel to the Ocean State for Friday’s Providence College Invitational.
