The second transformational element in Together We Transform is "Competing for Championships and National Prominence" and one program that is doing its part is women's tennis. Although Gary Glassman's team doesn't receive a great deal of fanfare, it finds itself in the midst of another fantastic season after claiming the last four America East championships.
With its sights set on a fifth straight title, our women's tennis team has won its last three matches including a convincing 7-0 win over Hofstra on March 30. Come cheer the team on in the final two home matches of the year against Hartford on April 15 and St. John's on April 16.
As for other spring sports looking for a championship…
Lacrosse Rising
Stony Brook joins Maryland, Notre Dame and Syracuse in an exclusive group that features both its men's and women's lacrosse teams ranked in the top 10.
As a department, we have high expectations for our lacrosse programs. The women's team has won three straight America East championships and is playing at a very high level. Last night's 17-5 win over UMBC was the latest in a string of strong wins. How strong? In its last four games, women's lacrosse has outscored the opposition 69-16.
Our men's team continues its push for a conference championship, rising to no. 8 in the national rankings heading in to Saturday's showdown at Princeton. The current position marks the first time in five seasons that the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team is ranked in the top 10 in both national polls.
Be sure to visit LAX Island for a game soon. The women are back in action at LaValle Stadium on Saturday, April 16 against New Hampshire while the men will host Marist in a non-conference game this coming Tuesday.
Launch of Lip Sync Battle
Our student-athletes are always coming up with incredible ideas, and the upcoming Lip Sync Battle on April 27 is the latest. Two members of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Lo Hathaway and Gabe Vazquez, have led the effort around this inaugural event to raise money for the Stony Brook Children's Hospital.
I am extremely proud of Gabe and Lo for creating a vision for this event and rallying support around it. Each of our teams are working on their lip sync, and I have heard positive early reviews! It will be a great night as a new tradition for our student-athletes is born. For more information please contact Gabe at gabriel.vazquez@stonybrook.edu.
