Stony Brook holds annual Wolfie Awards banquet

The Stony Brook Athletic Department held its annual awards ceremony, "The Wolfies" on Monday night in the Island Federal Credit Union Arena. Junior Courtney Murphy (Shirley, N.Y.) from women&rsquo;s lacrosse took home the Female Athlete of the Year award, while Male Athlete of the Year was given to senior Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) of men's basketball for the third consecutive year.

Murphy led nation with 85 goals and 97 points in the regular season and enters the NCAA Tournament with 95 goals, needing four to break the Division I record of 98 that has stood since 1984. She was one of 25 players named to the Tewaaraton list and was named the America East Conference Player of the Year.

Warney was named the America East Conference Player of the Year for the third straight season after he averaged a career-best 19.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. &nbsp;A finalist for the Karl Malone Award, Warney averaged 30.3 points and 15.3 during the America East Playoffs and scored a career-high 43 points in the championship game against Vermont as the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time as a Division I program.

The Female Rookie of the Year award went to Ogechi Anyagaligbo (Miami, Fla.) from women's basketball. Anyagaligbo, the America East Rookie of the Year, became the first freshman to lead the league in rebounding since 2003-04, averaging 9.0 per game en route to nine double-doubles. Her scoring average of 10.1 points per game also was tops among all freshmen in the conference. She was voted America East Rookie of the Week nine times, the second most in conference history.

Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway) of the men&rsquo;s soccer team took home the Male Rookie of the Year Wolfie. Gamwanya, the America East Conference Rookie of the Year, led all freshmen in the conference with 11 points on three goals and five assists. He was named the conference Rookie of the Week twice.

Senior Alyssa Coiro (Califon, N.Y.) of women&rsquo;s basketball and senior Ryan Tancin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) of cross country/track and field were the winners of the Female and Male Scholar-Athlete awards. Coiro received a degree in both history and political science with 3.74 GPA and will complete her Master of Arts in Teaching degree this month. Tancin will graduate later this month with a degree in mechanical engineering with a 3.8 GPA. He has been accepted into the PhD program for aerospace engineering at Purdue.

This year's Team of the Year awards went to Women's lacrosse and men&rsquo;s basketball. Both programs claimed the America East Conference titles and earned trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Junior Dorrien Van Dyke (North Port, N.Y.) and senior Carson Puriefoy (Wenonah, N.J.) were presented the Athletic Director's Award by Stony Brook Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron for their embodiment of Stony Brook athletic's ideals and core values.

Senior Kate Pouder (Miller Place, N.Y.) of the cross country/track and field teams was the recipient of the Dave Alexander Courage Award, which is given to a member of Stony Brook Athletics who has demonstrated uncommon bravery in the face of adversity. Pouder overcame the untimely loss of her father during the fall and continued her success both with her athletics and her academics. The award is named in honor of the late Dave Alexander, who coached swimming &amp; diving at Stony Brook for 32 years.

Alyssa Fleming (Shoreham, N.Y.) of women&rsquo;s lacrosse and Gabe Vazquez (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) of men's cross country/track and field were the winners of the Seawolves Choice Award, as voted on via live text messaging during the banquet. The award recognizes an&nbsp;athlete's indomitable spirit, boundless enthusiasm, tenacious confidence and devotion to Stony Brook Athletics.

Senior Raven Dorsey (Wayne, Pa.) of cross country and senior Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) of men&rsquo;s soccer received the Seawolves Impact Award. These honors are given to a student-athlete who has demonstrated exceptional contributions to his or her sports on the playing surface as well as within the campus and community.

Senior Kim Hanlon (White Plains, N.Y.) from women&rsquo;s basketball and senior Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) of baseball received the Athletic Performance Award in its first year. The honors were selected by the athletic performance staff and given to the student-athletes who demonstrated outstanding performance, consistency, discipline, perseverance and leadership in all facets of athletic performance.

Van Dyke joined senior Lucas Rock (Bay Shore, N.Y.) of men&rsquo;s lacrosse, senior Brittany Snow (Shamong, N.J.) of women&rsquo;s basketball and junior Christian Melian (Staten Island, N.Y.) of cross country/track and field were recipients of the SUNY Chancellor Awards for outstanding achievement in athletics and academics among SUNY's Div. I schools in their respective sports.

In addition to individual awards, Most Valuable Player and Academic MVP Awards were handed out by each of Stony Brook's 18 competing varsity teams.
