Lucy (Van Dalen) Oliver '12 to run Tuesday in Olympics 5000m

Aug. 15, 2016

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Stony Brook women's track & field alum Lucy (Van Dalen) Oliver '12 will compete in the 5000m for her native New Zealand Tuesday at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Oliver, who won the women's mile at the NCAA Championships in 2012 and was named America East Woman of the Year, is competing in her second Olympics. The Wanganui, New Zealand, native qualified for the semifinals in the 1500m at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

"For an athlete to make it to the Olympics once, it is a great achievement," said Stony Brook head coach Andy Ronan. "To do it twice is amazing.

"It was wonderful to be a part of Lucy's experience in London, and it is going to be exciting to see how she does tomorrow in the 5000m. It is fantastic that she has made it to Rio, as so many things have changed for her since London. She got married in January to Tim Oliver, has moved up in distance from the 1500m to the 5000m and has been working with a new coach, New Zealand Olympian Adrian Blinco.

"When you consider all that, it puts into perspective the hard work and determination that Lucy has put in to be on the start line tomorrow. We will never forget what she achieved her at Stony Brook, and what that did for the program, so we will watch with pride tomorrow knowing that a little Seawolf red is with her, as she competes in the Black uniform of New Zealand."

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. EDT (9:30 a.m. in Rio) and be aired on NBC Sports Network and online via NBCOlympics.com.
