MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Late scoring wasn't enough for the Stony Brook softball team as it fell to Eastern Michigan, 4-3, on the final day of the Madeira Beach Tournament Sunday morning. The Seawolves now sit at 1-4 on the year following the opening weekend of play.
Bryant's Reaction
"A couple more timely hits and we could have finished this weekend 3-2," said head coach
Megan T. Bryant. "We are a young team working to figure a lot of things out, and we now have a better idea of our strengths and weaknesses. Improvement from game to game and weekend to weekend is key at this time of year."
Highlights
- Eastern Michigan got on the board with a solo home run that landed over the center field wall in the first inning.
- Freshman Riley Craig (Thornton, Colo.) sent a double to right center in the top of the second, but the Seawolves were unable to bring her home.
- Eastern Michigan responded in the bottom of the inning, adding another run after a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to center moved runners around the diamond.
- Senior Sami Duffy (Carmel, N.Y.) got things going for the Seawolves in the third with a lead-off single. She advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt and single to left by freshman Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.), and eventually scored on a fielding error to make it a 2-1 game.
- The Eagles responded with another run in the bottom of the third.
- Duffy again got the Seawolves started in the fifth and eventually scored on an error, but Eastern Michigan again matched the Stony Brook score with another run of its own in the bottom of the inning.
- Sophomore Ileana Torres (Debary, Fla.) walked after entering the game for junior Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.), and moved to second on a fielding error. Duffy was again in on the scoring play as she sent a single out to center field to bring Torres home and get the Seawolves within a run.
- Stony Brook had its chance in the top of the seventh, but left three runners stranded in the final inning.
