STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook softball split a pair of America East Conference games vs. UMBC on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Seawolves took Game 1, 3-0, then fell to the Retrievers, 4-0, in Game 2.
Freshman
Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) tossed a complete-game shutout in Game 1, giving up just five hits while striking out three to earn her fourth victory of the season. Rahrich also went 3-for-6 at the plate over the two games, blasting her sixth home run of the season to deep center field in Game 1.
Junior
Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.) chipped in with two hits, an RBI and a run scored on the day. Freshman
Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) and sophomore
Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) also contributed with a hit in each game.

"We played pretty well in Game 1, I really liked the intensity we had last weekend to open up conference play and that kind of carried over. Maddy [Neales] gave us some good innings [in Game 2], gave us a chance to win, but we didn't really put anything together offensively until the seventh inning – with our two pinch hitters."
Game 1: Stony Brook 3, UMBC 0
The Seawolves scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.) got Stony Brook on the board with a single, driving in
Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.). One batter later,
Lexie Shue (Lakewood, Calif.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Evans and make it a two-run game.
Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) helped her own cause in the bottom of the sixth, blasting a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence to make it 3-0. She now has a team-high six home runs and 19 RBI's at the plate. In the circle, the freshman now has two complete-game shutouts in 2017. She's given up just two earned runs in her last 21.0 innings pitched.
Game 2: UMBC 4, Stony Brook 0
Maddy Neales (Orange, Calif.) started in the circle for Stony Brook, lasting 5.1 innings while giving up just two hits, four walks and four runs.
Lindsey Hughes (San Dimas, Calif.) took over for the last 1.2 innings, giving up no runs on just one hit.
Seven different Seawolves tallied a hit, led by
Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) multi-hit performance (2-for-3). Stony Brook had eight hits in total in Game 2.
