Softball sweeps top-seeded Binghamton in regular-season finale, clinching No. 3 seed in postseason tournament

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook softball closed out the 2017 regular season in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon at University Field, taking a pair of games vs. first-place Binghamton on Senior Day. The Seawolves (16-27, 9-7 AE) won Game 1 by the final score of 2-1, then defeated the Bearcats 4-1 in Game 2.
 
With two wins on the final day of the season, Stony Brook has clinched the No. 3 seed in the America East Championships. The tournament, hosted at top-seeded Binghamton, will take place May 10-13.
 
Stony Brook honored the accomplishments of its three seniors - Alex Petrolia (Henderson, Nevada), Sami Duffy (Carmel, N.Y.) and Lexie Shue (Lakewood, California) - in a ceremony prior to the start of Game 1.

"It was a tremendous day for us all the way around. Not only did we pitch it well, we played great defense and were able to do what we needed to do offensively. I loved our fight."

Game 1: Stony Brook 2, Binghamton 1
 
  • Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) tossed her 10th complete game of the season, giving up just seven hits and one earned run over 7.0 innings pitched while striking out six. Rahrich helped her own cause at the plate, slapping a single to right field to plate a run in the third inning.
  • Katelyn Corr (Suffield, Conn.) had a team-high two hits, driving in the Seawolves' first run of the day with a single in the third inning.
  • Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) and Sami Duffy (Carmel, N.Y.) each chipped in with a hit of their own.
 
 Game 2: Stony Brook 4, Binghamton 1
 
  • Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) paced Stony Brook at the plate in Game 2, going 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Lexie Shue (Lakewood, Calif.) celebrated Senior Day in style, belting a home run to deep left-center to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) added a hit and two RBI's, and came on to record the final two outs in the top of the seventh to earn the save.
  • Lindsey Hughes (San Dimas, Calif.) was outstanding on the mound for the Seawolves, working 6.1 innings to earn her fourth win of the season in the circle. Hughes gave up just six hits and one run, striking out four batters in the process.
 
On Deck
Following two victories to close out the regular season, No. 3 Stony Brook is set to square off with No. 6 Hartford in the first round of the America East Championships on Wednesday, May 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Binghamton.
