Together We Transform Thursday: Sept. 21, 2017

Culture is Contagious

We are now in year three of Together We Transform, and I could not be more excited about the progress that we have made as a department since releasing our five-year plan in 2015.

In two short years we have established a program-best 3.17 GPA, built a robust Life Skills department, revitalized facilities and enhanced student-athlete services in the areas of athletic performance, sports medicine, nutrition and mental health. Fundraising, ticket sales and corporate sponsorship sales have hit all-time highs.

The power of positive energy is alive and well for the Seawolves.

Although we have achieved a great deal, we must continue to take giant steps forward together. We are pushing harder than ever to elevate our department so that we can help to elevate the national profile of Stony Brook.

Winning obviously is a critical component toward that mission and, through the first few weeks of the year, our teams are experiencing tremendous success.

A quick look at our fall sports provides a window into the successful start to the fall:

Football

20556
  • Outscored Rhode Island and Sacred Heart 80-25 in the last two games
  • 2-1 record with only loss coming on the road at 19th-ranked USF in a game that was tied in the fourth quarter
Volleyball
  • Team is off to its best start since 2007
  • With a record of 9-6, the team has won five straight and has already eclipsed its win total (8) from 2016
Men's Soccer
  • Team is off to its best start since 2004
  • 5-2-1 record heading into Tuesday night's home game against George Washington
Women's Soccer
  • Defeated Wagner 6-0 on Sunday with all of the goals scored by freshmen
  • After facing Sacred Heart tomorrow, team opens America East play at Maine on Sunday
Cross Country
  • Men currently ranked 7th in the Northeast region and women poised for a regional ranking
  • Alum Christina Melian named Top 30 honoree for NCAA Woman of the Year
Tennis
  • Senior Elizabeth Tsvetkov selected to compete in the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif., featuring the top individual players from each Division I conference
20386

There is so much to look forward to as all of our fall teams make a push to win conference championships.

Basketball season is just around the corner, and I'll have more to share about our men's and women's teams next week.

Seawolves on ESPN College GameDay
20554

ESPN's College GameDay will take place in Times Square on Saturday – and the Seawolves will be there.

Stony Brook will be represented by our band and spirit squads, who along with Wolfie will try to get some quality camera time. One of the highlights of GameDay is when Lee Corso makes his selection in the featured game of the day by placing the mascot headgear on his head. Although Stony Brook-Towson might not be the featured game, we are going to make sure that an extra wolfhead makes its way to Times Square just in case!

Watch ESPN GameDay beginning at 9 a.m. EST on Saturday and look for the Seawolves in the crowd!

Support the Seawolves Saturday

As always, I want to thank our loyal donors and season ticket holders for their generosity. We need you now more than ever. Please know that every ticket purchased and dollar donated makes a difference for our University and for our student-athletes.

There was a tremendous crowd on hand at LaValle Stadium for our win over Sacred Heart last weekend, and we need that same energy on Saturday. Towson comes to town for our first CAA home game so get your tickets now and join us for a great night on the North Shore!
