Stony Brook Opens Season at Brown Invitational

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Coming off an appearance in its first Missouri Valley Conference title match a season ago, the Stony Brook women's tennis team is ready to start its 2019-20 campaign with a trip to Providence, R.I. and the Brown Invitational.

Returners Jamie Wei (Chiayi City, Taiwan) and Nolwenn Cardoso (Paris, France) will lead the Seawolves after earning MVC All-Select distinctions at last year's team conference championship.

FORMAT
Play will begin on Friday at noon, Saturday at 10 a.m. and Sunday 9 a.m., with flights determining when each team will play. The teams in competition with the Seawolves are Brown, UMass, Dartmouth and Rhode Island.

Each program will have their team split up into pairs of two, with two singles matches and a doubles match featured. The winner of each matchup will move on into the next round, while the losers will drop into a different draw.

SEAWOLVES NOTES
  • The Seawolves added a pair to their 2019 roster, with Mathilde Sreeves (Rhu, Scotland) and Kristine Theys (Puyricard, France) joining head coach Gary Glassman's squad.
  • Wei finished her inaugural season with a 15-3 record at No. 1 singles. She also won 12 of her 17 matches at No. 1 doubles.
  • Cardoso was Wei's teammate at No. 1 doubles for the season, finishing at 12-5. She had a 9-4 record at No. 2 singles in the 2018-19 campaign.
  • The combo won the No. 1 doubles MVC title a season ago, losing just two games in their final two matches.
  • Maria Pinto Ribeiro (Lisbon, Portugal) and Sasha Bekirova (Brooklyn, N.Y.) both won the title at No. 2 doubles.
