MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — It turns out
Jourdin Hering's two-hit performance in Game 1 was just a tune-up.
After driving in two runs in a 9-5 win over Columbia, Hering hit for the cycle in a Game 2, a 9-2 win against Providence on Saturday afternoon in Madeira Beach.
"I'm just having a blast with this team," Hering said. "We work together so well and everyone has each other's back.
Shelbi Denman and
Dawn Bodrug came out hot today which got us excited. We use all facets of the game and get gritty when we have to."
With the win, the Seawolves move to 3-0 to open the season for the first time since 2009.
"This was a very good Day 2 for us in terms of how we played, the improvements we made and the results," coach Megan Bryant said. "Offensively, we did a lot of good things. Our defense was strong and pitching gave us the chance to win. We want to finish the weekend strong tomorrow."
After going down 2-0 in the top of the first inning in Game 1, Stony Brook responded with a four-run outburst in the bottom half of the inning on RBI hits by
Jordyn Nowakowski,
Alina Lance and
Taylor Juenke.
After Columbia evened the score the next half-inning,
Melissa Rahrich cranked a two-run homer to give Stony Brook a lead it would hold onto for good.
Hering added some insurance with a two-run single and the Seawolves added another run to win, 9-5.
2019 all-rookie team member
Shelbi Denman picked up the win in her first start of the season, allowing five runs over 6 1/3 innings.
Game 2 also saw some first-inning fireworks. The Seawolves plated three runs in the top half of the first against Providence, including two on an RBI single from
Riley Craig.
After surrendering a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first, JUCO transfer
Dawn Bodrug responded by striking out the next six batters. Bodrug picked up the win in her first Division I start, striking out 11 in a complete game.
Hering got to work early in Game 2, singling in the first and driving in a run with a triple in the second.
Nicole McCarvill plated Hering with a base hit and Craig hit a sacrifice fly to cap the three-run second inning.
Hering hit a solo homer in the fourth and then completed the cycle with a double in the sixth.
The Seawolves will wrap up their trip to Florida with two games on Sunday, starting with a game against Georgetown at 9 a.m.
