WEST POINT, N.Y. — One point away from a season-opening victory, the Stony Brook tennis team could taste victory at West Point on Friday night.
Fordham took that taste out of the Seawolves' mouths, winning the final three matches to secure a 4-3 comeback victory on the campus of Army West Point in both teams' season opener.
"All credit to Fordham," head coach
Gary Glassman said. "They were down and never went away. We competed hard, but couldn't close it out. It was a tough way to start the season, but we'll bounce back."
Maria Pinto Ribeiro and
Mathilde Sreeves earned the doubles point with a 6-4 win in the No. 3 slot, backing up the
Elizabeth Pam and
Kristine Theys victory at No. 2 doubles.
Thanks to wins from Theys and
Nolwenn Cardoso, Stony Brook jumped out to a 3-1 match lead and needed a third-set victory in one of the three remaining matches but were not able to secure one and the match slipped away.
The Seawolves remain in West Point for a matchup on Saturday morning with the Black Knights of Army West Point, looking for a split on opening weekend.
