Stony Brook Athletics Coronavirus Latest News

Here are the latest Stony Brook Athletics developments related to COVID-19:

March 30: The NCAA on Monday voted to allow schools to provide spring-sport student-athletes an additional season of competition and an extension of their period of eligibility.

• March 23: So many of our alumni, parents and friends expressed concern for student-athletes who have been displaced and shared heartfelt sentiments of support and compassion. In fact, so many have been asking how they can help, and our student-athletes need support now more than ever. If you would still like to make a gift in support of our current student-athletes, please consider visiting one of the sport-specific funds on our Stony Brook Athletics TeamRaiser page. Gifts to these funds will help provide students with critical funds for emergency circumstances.

As the global, national, and local impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to evolve every day, our primary focus is on the health and safety of both our staff and the broader Seawolves community. We thank you for your continued support of Stony Brook Athletics.

• March 23: Students living on campus prior to the COVID-19 crisis will receive a refund or credit for housing fees and meal plan fees (if applicable) based on the proportionate time between when they left campus housing – and were formally cleared by Residential Life – and the end of the spring term. Students living off-campus with meal plans will receive a refund or credit for the unused portion of their meal plans.

All students will receive prorated refunds or credits for certain other fees for services that have been discontinued due to the COVID-19 emergency. The calculation of the amount of the refund or credit is being determined for each of these fees. The fees eligible for a credit/refund include:

- Transportation fee
- Athletics fee
- Recreation and campus life fee
- Student activity fee

As soon as additional information is available, we will update you. Credits or refund approaches will be finalized as soon as possible and certainly before the end of the spring semester.

March 22: If you have medical supplies or comfort care items to donate, please contact Joan Dickinson, Stony Brook University community relations director, at Joan.Dickinson@stonybrook.edu or call (631) 219-0603. We will arrange for a drop off time and location to get your donations into the right hands quickly. As we need to be diligent about social distancing and the safety of all involved, scheduled appointments are the most efficient and safest way to go for all involved.

Many neighbors and community groups have asked about making cards to let the medical staff who are working around the clock know they are thinking of them. The easiest and most effective way to share your sentiments is through a simple cell phone video. If you would like to send a message of support, please email a video no longer than 20 seconds to Joan.Dickinson@stonybrook.edu. The videos will be shared throughout the hospital areas and visible as the employees move throughout their day.

March 17: In an effort to significantly reduce the population density on campus and ensure social distancing measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, the university has made the difficult decision to close on-campus housing. Details.

March 16: Senior Associate Athletic Director Debbie DeJong explains the impact on eligibility and recruiting in this podcast.

March 12: Spring sports have been canceled throughout the NCAA.
