Seven Stony Brook Programs Recognized by NCAA for Academic Success

INDIANAPOLIS — Excelling in the classroom and on the field of play is the hallmark of being a great student-athlete.

Stony Brook had seven of its 16 programs recognized by the NCAA, who annually honors teams earning multiyear Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

Men's Cross Country, Men's Track and Field, Women's Basketball, Women's Soccer, Women's Swimming and Diving, Women's Tennis and Women's Volleyball were the Stony Brook programs honored for their exceptional performance in the classroom.

"We take tremendous pride in the academic success of our student-athletes, and the recognition from the NCAA validates the hard work of our student-athletes and academic staff," Stony Brook Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron said. "I'm extremely grateful to our coaches for recruiting high-caliber student-athletes and to the outstanding Stony Brook faculty for providing them with a first-class educational experience."

The APR is calculated as follows:

  • Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.
  • A team's total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team's Academic Progress Rate.
  • In addition to a team's current-year APR, its rolling four-year APR is also used to determine accountability.
The number of America East programs matched Hartford for the league lead. Every women's team that earned the NCAA's Public Recognition Award this year also earned a perfect 1,000 score, including the five Seawolves teams listed.

In all, the NCAA recognized 1,380 teams from 326 member schools. Full APR score listings will be released on May 19.
