EIGHT! Women's Lacrosse Defends America East Title, Awaits NCAA Draw

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — On to the NCAA Tournament!

The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team earned its eighth straight America East title with a 16-9 win against second-seeded UAlbany on Saturday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

The Seawolves (14-2) will participate in the ESPNU-televised selection show on Sunday at 9 p.m. from campus and expect to host the opening rounds.

Stony Brook extended its winning streak against America East opponents to 54 games with the title-game victory. With Oklahoma softball's 65-game winning streak within the Big 12 snapped on Friday night, the Seawolves now own the longest conference winning streak in any sport tracked by the NCAA.

Stony Brook's only two losses this season have come at No. 1 North Carolina and at then-No. 2 Syracuse, which currently is ranked third.

The Seawolves defeated UAlbany (11-7) three times in 2021, each win by seven goals.

"For some teams, winning the conference championship is the Super Bowl," coach Joe Spallina said. "For us, it's the beginning."

America East Co-Defensive Player of the Year Rayna Sabella led a standout effort by the defense in Saturday's win. She tallied three caused turnovers and three ground balls in the first half alone.

Stony Brook never trailed in the contest.

The Seawolves took a 9-4 lead into intermission after Ally Kennedy's goal with 2:18 remaining in the first half. The Great Danes pulled within three goals early in the second half, but consecutive goals from Kaeli Huff — the first after receiving a pass from Bridget Considine — blunted UAlbany's charge.

Stony Brook led by as many as seven goals in the second half.

Kennedy had five goals, while Huff had a hat trick and Kailyn Hart and Taryn Ohlmiller had two apiece.

Kennedy had a dozen goals in the two-game tournament, a record for an America East playoffs. She now sits alone in second place in program history in goals with 257. The previous record for a tournament had been 11 goals by Kylie Ohlmiller in 2018 and Boston University's Sarah Dalton in 2009.

Kennedy was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while Huff, Ohlmiller and Kameron Halsall were named to the all-championship team.
