STORRS, Conn. – Stony Brook tennis kicked off its fall slate with a strong overall performance, particularly in singles play across three days at the UConn Invite to open up its fall schedule in the 2023-24 season.
The weekend was highlighted by
Mia Palladino who finished 3-0 and with straight-set singles victories to lead off each day and
Chandrika Joshi, who won all three of her singles tiebreakers for a 3-0 weekend.
Day One (Sept. 15)
Stony Brook faced off against Army West Point on day one of the invite, taking three of the seven singles matches and adding a doubles win. The Seawolves earned victories in the top three spots, with Palladino,
Elena Lobo-Corral and Joshi each taking victories.
- Palladino fought to a 6-4, 6-3 victory in match #1.
- Lobo-Corral sprinted to a 6-2, 6-1 victory in match #2.
- After falling behind with a 3-6 defeat, Joshi won the second game 7-5 and took the first-to-10 tiebreaker, 10-4.
Stony Brook also won the first doubles game on Friday, with Palladino and
Kristi Boro teaming up for a 6-4 win.
Day Two (Sept. 16)
SBU faced off against Wesleyan University [CT] on Saturday and split the six singles matches. However, Wesleyan took all three doubles games.
- Palladino once again led off singles play with a win, winning 6-3, 6-4.
- Joshi again recovered from a set down in match #3, winning 3-6, 6-2, 12-10.
- Darian Perfiliev won match #6, with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 result.
Day Three (Sept. 17)
SBU finished the weekend with its best performance on the scoreboard against Bryant, taking seven of nine singles matches and three of the four doubles games.
- Palladino led off with her third singles victory of the weekend, taking the tiebreaker in a 6-1, 3-6, 10-3 triumph.
- Joshi again rallied from a set down, winning 4-6, 7-6 and the tiebreaker 10-3.
- Boro won in straight sets with a pair of 6-1 wins.
- Darian Perfiliev took match #6 in a 6-1, 6-2 decision
- Debby Mastrodima took match #7 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
- Sara Medved rallied from a second-set defeat, winning the tiebreaker for a 7-6, 3-6, 10-4 scoreline.
- Aradhana Jayakrishna finished with a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 tiebreaker victory.
In doubles play, Corral and
Cornelia Bruu-Syversen won the second game 6-4, Joshi and Perfiliev teamed up for a 6-3 win in game #3, and Medved and Mastrodima clinched the doubles victory with win a 7-5 win in game #4.
NOTES
The third set was played as a first-to-10 tiebreaker, with each point adding one to a player's score.
