Together We Transform Thursday – September 26, 2024

Football is Feeling It!

Shortly after our 24-17 win at Campbell, Billy Cosh stood in the middle of the cramped visiting locker room to address the team. For a few brief moments, the music that had been blaring was turned down as all eyes locked in on our head coach.

There are few places more jubilant than a victorious locker room, and the scene Saturday night was no exception. The music was cranked up as were the spirits of everyone inside. As I took in the scene, I felt an overwhelming sense of happiness seeing the joy on the faces of our coaches, players and support staff.

Our team has come so far in the short period of time that Billy has been our head coach and, as he stepped forward to deliver his postgame message, it was abundantly clear that the confidence in the room was as elevated as the volume of the music that had just been playing.

His message to our guys was simple: let's enjoy the win while making sure that we turn our immediate focus to Morgan State. It is often said that winning is contagious, and our guys have caught the bug. Although there have been many individual superlatives throughout our three-game winning streak – for example, Roland Dempster leads the CAA in rushing while twice being named CAA Offensive Player of the Week and Rudy Silvera is tied for the league lead in interceptions – our success thus far is based on the entire team buying in to our new coaching staff.

There is still a long way to go this season, but through four games it is evident that we are building something special under Coach Cosh.

It's exciting to be around, and I hope that you will plan to be at LaValle Stadium on Saturday at 3:30 when we are back on Long Island for the first of two straight home games. My hope is that when our guys take the field against Morgan State this weekend, they will be able to look up and see a sea of red.

As Coach Cosh preaches, the goal each week is to be 1-0. Get your tickets now and come cheer on your Seawolves on Saturday and again on Oct. 5 against Villanova. There has never been a better time than right now!

Basketball Begins

When fans come to watch our men's and women's basketball teams play this season, they will notice a new lighting system that was installed earlier this month.

The bright lights will help to illuminate two teams that are poised to compete for CAA supremacy. Both teams held their first official practices of the season on Monday.

Our men's team, which won 20 games and came within one basket of winning the CAA title a season ago, have reloaded by adding several impactful newcomers to a roster that returns key contributors Jared Frey, Toby Onyekonwu, Sabry Philip and Andre Snoddy.

Led by first-year head coach Joy McCorvey, our women's team is looking to build upon a season in which it won the CAA regular season title and matched a program record with 28 wins. Several familiar faces are back to lead the charge, including returning starters Kelis Corley, Zaida Gonzalez and Marla King.

Be sure to get your season tickets for men's and women's basketball now and be a part of the action all season long.

Shutout Streak for Women's Soccer at Four Games

No team in our department is hotter than women's soccer, which has won each of its last four games by a combined score of 13-0.

The current streak, which includes wins over former conference foes UMass Lowell and New Hampshire, will be tested tonight as Tobias Bischof and his squad take on unbeaten Elon.

The team will be back home at LaValle Stadium next Thursday to take on Monmouth at 6 p.m.

Volleyball Storms to Best Start Since 2002

Another hot team has been our volleyball program, which jumped out to its best start since 2002 and currently sports a record of 8-3.

Kristin Belzung's squad opened CAA play by splitting two matches with Hofstra last weekend and will travel to William & Mary for contests on Friday and Saturday. Graduate setter Torri Henry was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week after totaling 68 assists, 23 digs, five blocks and four kills against Hofstra. She also leads the CAA in total assists with 435.

You can catch the team in action at Pritchard Gym Oct. 4-5 when Charleston travels to Long Island.

Cross Country Racing Toward Success

Our cross country teams can always be counted upon to be extremely competitive, and this year is no exception. The two-time defending CAA champion men took home the team title at the Jasper Fall Invitational hosted by Manhattan on Sept. 14. Not to be outdone, the women also claimed the team title at the event.

Collin Gilstrap and Grace Weigele each claimed first place individual finishes and earned CAA Runner of the Week honors. For both Collin and Grace, it was their second individual win through the first two meets of the season.

1957 Club Fundraiser to Support NIL

Our friends at The 1957 Club are hosting their second annual Casino Night fundraiser on Oct. 10 at the Victorian Studio on Main in Port Jefferson.

The need to generate revenue to support NIL opportunities for our Stony Brook student-athletes has never been more critical. Last year's Casino Night event was a fantastic experience and this year's event will undoubtedly be bigger and better! Learn more about The 1957 Club and register for Casino Night today.

This is the time to get involved and help propel our program forward by supporting the cause!

I'm grateful to all of our generous and loyal supporters for being a part of this journey with us. Let's keep thinking big and taking giant strides as we advance Stony Brook Athletics into the future. We can truly achieve anything that we set our minds to when we lock arms and move forward together.

Let's keep the wins and the positive energy coming.

Keep believing!
